Welcome to 6 Seats to Somewhere – A Worldschooling Family Adventure

Hi there! Welcome to 6 Seats to Somewhere – our family’s way to document our lives as we dramatically downsize our possessions, pack up what’s left, and venture out into the beautiful world to explore, learn and make memories we will never forget. Our large family will be worldschooling as we travel the world…more about that below.

Meet our Family

Amie & Jay met at flight school in Phoenix, Arizona in 2002, married in 2008, and became parents in 2011. We share a love of family, travel, and winging it. Amie has been enjoying home organizing for the last several years and is now deep in decluttering and minimizing their own home to prepare for this trip. Jay is a pilot for a commercial airline and has been exploring the world as he works. He is always on the lookout for new places to take the family.

  • Most nervous about: I’m most nervous about the dynamics of living in smaller spaces with less freedom to “escape”. I’m also very nervous about managing my food allergies (peanuts, treenuts, soy and mango), especially where there is a language barrier to manage.

What to Expect

We are figuring it all out as we go, so expect the unexpected. At this time, we’ve booked AirBnbs through January 2025, but are keeping our minds open to adjusting as the experience unfolds. Jay and I will write about not only the places we are visiting, but also about how we are approaching worldschooling our family of 4 children, how we budget for long term travel, what we wish we did differently, and what is working really well.

Writing is an important subject for our family’s worldschooling journey. Our children will be sharing their thoughts and feelings about the adventure as well as things they have learned about along the way. What a better way to encourage writing than to keep our friends and family up-to-date on what they are up to.

What is a Worldschooling Family?

Simply put, worldschooling our family means homeschooling on the road. We will not do traditional homeschooling with books at the kitchen table as we did over Covid, but taking what we learned from that experience (the adventures, the flexibility, encouraging curiosity) and taking it with us from country to country. We have plans for math curriculum so that if/when we return to traditional schooling, the kids will be on track to jump right back in. Language arts will be our focus as they read, write, and communicate about our travels. History, art, physical education, health, music, social studies, science and more will all be learned by experience. Museums, live concerts, cultural celebrations, family conversations, meeting new people, reading, learning new languages, and more.

Where are we Going on our Adventure Abroad?

First Stop: DC Area, United States – There is a chance we will be landing in the DC area after our travels so we are starting there. We will use a furnished rental as our home base and check out the suburbs to find our most ideal neighborhoods. We will eat at restaurants, check out parks, and even look at schools so we can better imagine our potential post-trip lives.

Second Stop: Aruba – Aruba can sound like a random place to start, but in reality it’s perfect for us. Jay’s parents spend a lot of time in this beautiful country and we were just there this past January to enjoy it for the fist time. The kids have the comfort of knowing exactly where we are going for this first leg and we will be spending the two weeks there with their grandparents. There isn’t a ton of touristy stuff that we feel we need to do in Aruba, so the plan is to do a lot of beach reading, resting, and mentally preparing for the European leg we have coming up next.

Buckle Up…

So here we go – buckle up, bookmark the blog, and enjoy the ride. We are so glad you are joining us as we are worldschooling our family on this adventure!

Sharing is Caring!
