My Horse Poems

The Thrum of Hooves

Hooves pounded sawdust,
sending hurricanes of dust into the dewy morning air.
Clip Clop Clip Clop.
The white horse turns a corner.
Swish.
A silky tail follows.
The horse gets ready to jump.
She leaves the ground.
Pound.
A cloud horse lands.
The ground vibrates the Thrum of Hooves

His Head Turns

I watch the paddock.
The sound of munching
hay fills the air.
A dark bay stomps.
Clump.
I hum a tune.
His head turns.

Swaying Side to Side

I mount a black mountain.
He stirs under my weight.
The dark horse starts walking,
his body Swaying Side to Side.

Foal Made of Honey

The wild horses run free.
Sounds of hooves hitting the ground bounce off my eardrums.
A filly catches my eye.
Her tan shiny coat reflects the sun.
I whisper softly “The Foal made of Honey.”

The Ghost Horse

A stick snapped.
I turned slowly.
A horse was standing near a maple tree. I made my way between poison ivy. Carefully.
I reached toward it.
My hand passed through.
The Ghost Horse.

Pony

I walked out into the paddock.
I felt change in the air.
A new presence.
I spotted a speckled Pony.

Gentle Giant

A Winny sounded from a stall.
I walked toward the sound.
Saying hello to every creature I passed.
The horse that winnied stuck his head out of the stall.
A Clydesdale.
The Gentle Giant.

Appaloosa

The horse breathed.
Snow flew of his muzzle.
Mirroring the speckled coat he had on.
His tail swished,
dragging on his dappled hairs.
He was an Appaloosa.

Suited Up

She put on her saddle pad,
she put on her saddle.
She put on her leg wraps.
She put on her girth.
She put on her bridle.
She was Suited Up.

Reared

His ears were back.
His eyes were slits.
His legs trembled.
He Reared.

Shined

I brushed his body with a curry comb.
I brushed his body with a hard brush.
I brushed his body with a soft brush.
I combed his mane.
I combed his tail.
I picked his hooves.
He Shined.

Thousand Eyes

I lead my dusty brown horse
around the ring.
We stop.
Turn.
And face the crowd.
I saw a
Thousand Eyes.
